EP 2 - What are you talking about, Jesus?
Gospel of Mark 4: 1-9
Jesus is on the coastline with a huge crowd gathering nearby from, I would assume, nearby villages. He gets on a boat and then begins to teach the crowd whom, I assume again, are proficient with the fishing industry. Sure that would mean that many may be fishermen, but then we have those who fix boats, mend nets, clean and prepare fish, distributors that carry fish, and even to the merchants and the chefs that get the fish to the rest of the community.
With that in mind, when Jesus goes onto the boat to preach and teach, you can almost be assured that he would speak to what the audience is used to, in this case, fishing.
BUT THEN HE DOES SOMETHING I DID NOT NOTICE NOR EXPECTED!
JESUS TALKS ABOUT FARMING!
In his parable, he talks about a sower scattering seeds. This thought today is not so much about a discourse of the parable, many others have already talked on it.
My reflection is on this question: “Why did Jesus talk about farming to a fishing village?”
It’s been bothering me… so time for more reflection.
(Maybe “bothering” is the wrong word… but it’s been on my mind for a while now)
